What an excellent read!

This is a sequel to his Jack Torrance. Stephen King not only wrote a sequel but with the consideration of the age of the character’s son, Dan, as a middle age man, and the characters that were linked back to the original book back in 1977.

It was brilliantly written with vivid visual description of a new thrilling horror
Stephen King was able to capture a young 13-year old with her youth, her physical beauty without long passages of words by using simple description of her blond hair and bright clear eyes. But her maturity and smartness come from her thoughts and how when she used it to communicate with Dan that definitely speaks volume, as the author was able to creates the very same image in the audience’s head.

The writing was total horror and had the audience’s hair all jumped up on their back and skin.

The linkage from the first book to the new one was a great continuation as if time had not passed by between the 2 books.

This is a must read and even better to read The Shinning first.

— Spoiler ahead —

The idea of taking steam from the shining was a brilliant plot, and the ability to go into swap minds, or to be able in the same mind together is clever.

Stephen King decided the trip to where the burnt down hotel was a great link back to the childhood and evil comes back to a place where it’s most haunted, especially with Abra and her great grandpa was the very same person, that he was the real uncle.

The visual telepathic communication about charring and smoking birthday cake, or when Dan gave Abra a way out to go to the dump, to throw things out to the dump like an old fridge, rather than throwing antique dishes of her mother’s, was so visual that the audience has a close sense of the idea about sending pictures instead of speaking one’s mind.

The kidnappings of shinning kids were definitely total horror.

The starting point of Dan’s AA was another great link back to his father, Jack. And Dan’s effort to try kicking the habit was admirable. The parallel look with Abra on the alcohol showed there were more similarities than what was shown.

The ending about the lecture from 1 shining to another, how each of his generations had the rage and almost killed someone with a stick like object, be it a cane, or a mallet, or when Dan’s arm was broken by Abra’s great grandfather (his grandfather), or how Dan also had beaten someone into unconsciousness, all were about something that they had almost no control with as part of being the Shining.

The scary part was he asked if  “is it the killing you wish you could take back, or the joy of the killing” was haunting as it showed the struggle of the characters.

The main thing about his father, who made a great cameo in only 1 scene, to do the last push as a gist of wind, to kill rose the hat, was an excellent wrap of the 2 books.

Measles was  a smart way to the plot, especially hauntingly it has been a bigger issue this year than in the past. This by chance plot gives the familiar yet new feeling.

The part about Dan had Momo in him, the old soul and let the true knot breathed in and all pouf, disappeared. That’s a very creative way of thinking.

Ultimately, it ended with Doctor Sleep to show how he can do things, that he can communicate with the soon to be dead people without speaking and asked them to sleep and everything will be okay. He can read the mind and helps the dying man Carling to be rest as he was worried about his cat.

The description of Abra was supernatural and detailed, not by her description, but by each incident and her behavior. it shows her innocence and adorable, determination , maturity all at once. even when she was a kid. it makes the audience to go backward in time in the memory lane to learn everything about Abra.
