Before Midnight (Movie)

BeforeMidnightMain Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

Review: 7 out of 10 stars.

Third installment of the story (Before Sunset in 2004 and Before Sunrise in 1994.) It tracks the life after they are married and have 2 kids together for 9 years. Did not watch the first 2 but this one was more about a couple arguing most of the time in the beautiful and earth tone Greece.

The dialogues are flowing and logical for the most part. It did have moments where it portrayed Celine’s character as almost too unhappy while Jesse was still the free spirit. But Jesse tried and tried to rationalize even Celine’s point of view is valid. Her upset feeling makes sense but you almost feel bad for Jesse.

The movie explores the sacrifice when being with someone, and the bottled up emotions that were not expressed and being tolerated until they explode. It’s realistic and thought provoking, that we are all humans and are not perfect, but we strive to do our best to coexist and find the best of each other.

Lots of really good chemistry between the two main characters and are very believable. They acted very comfortably together (probably because it’s the third installment.)

The movie was filmed in a few segments of 10 to 12 minutes non-stop conversation, whether it’s on the road, in a ruin, along the water, except when they were with other people.

Keywords:  romantic, comedy, drama

— Spoiler ahead —

Infidelity was one of the main arguments between the 2 characters, and how Jesse refused to answer when he was being “interrogated” on a specific occasion. The answer was clearly yes but he deflected it to her being probably be with someone else at someone else. It’s much easier to deflect than deny when it comes to having to lie.
