Pacific Rim (Movie)

PacificRimMain Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Robert Kazinsky, Rinko Kikuchi

Review: 6.5 out of 10 stars (all for fx.)

The trailer showed what CGI can do and makes robots and aliens look good and realistic when they crush buildings and bridges. The actual movie was not too far off from all there is, unfortunately. The plot is simple. It’s about how robots, operated by humans, are fighting off aliens. Each robot needs to be operated by (more…)

The Conjuring (Movie)

TheConjuringMain Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston

Review: 8.5 out of 10 stars.

The Conjuring can be described as a scary paranormal movie.

It’s a combination of the Exorcist and Paranormal Activity. It is based on true events about Ed and Lorraine Warren educating and trying to exorcise for a family when the priest could not do so because the family was not baptized.

For some it was just another scary movie, but it is actually made quite believable and while the “plot” is not new, the producers and writers dramatized the events just enough with the really, really loud (more…)

Red 2 (Movie)

Red2Main Cast: Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich

Review: 4 out of 10 stars.

Red was better than Red 2 with the story and acting being more believable and the movie was just more enjoyable in general.

Red 2 was poorly written and acted. It was kind of like an under radar DC Comics (more…)

The Lone Ranger (Movie)

TheLoneRangerMain Cast: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper

Review: 8 out of 10 stars.

The Lone Ranger is better than a typical cowboy movie, with Depp being a quirky (as he’s always been that it’s close to typecast), with the earth’s only righteous lawyer. They teamed up while pursuing their own quests.

All these were narrated at a very fun way in a (more…)

Before Midnight (Movie)

BeforeMidnightMain Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

Review: 7 out of 10 stars.

Third installment of the story (Before Sunset in 2004 and Before Sunrise in 1994.) It tracks the life after they are married and have 2 kids together for 9 years. Did not watch the first 2 but this one was more about a couple arguing most of the time in the beautiful and earth tone Greece.

The dialogues are flowing and logical for the most part. It did have moments where (more…)

Turtle Tower (Eat/Drink)

TurtleTowerLarkinRating: Rocking good
Where: Tenderloin / Civic Center, San Francisco, CA (645 Larkin Street, between Ellis and Eddy)

Review: Moved a couple doors up from 631 to 645 Larkin Street because their lease was up. New location is clean and more spacious (old location has the front corner shop plus from the side entrance to more space.) But it has the same number of seats. The old spot had the seats closer together.

Food is as always really good. The broth was great and addictive! Very flavorful and you want to (more…)

Monsters University (Movie)

MonstersUniversityMain Cast: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren

Review: 7 out of 10 stars.

Cute movie about how the 2 main scarers and their team trying to become the best frat group to scare the most of children. Without knowing the original movie, one would wonder how this is suitable (more…)

White House Down (Movie)

WhiteHouseDownMain Cast: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Richard Jenkins

Review: 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Movie about White House being attacked and how to get the president (Foxx) out by a guy who did not get a job at the secret service (Tatum.) And it’s 2:17 long with  a budge of 150M.

Good popcorn thriller comedy by Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum. Tons of good firing actions, many dumb funny lines, impossible (more…)

Man Of Steel (Movie)

ManOfSteelMain Cast: Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon

Review: 6.5 out of 10 stars (all for the fx.)

B or B-, and without a lot of effort in the fx it would be a C+.

The story is just poorly sketched out. And it’s really about the superman, not what superman does.

The writer definitely put a lot of effort in writing out the origin of Superman and all the history of Krypton but they are more like scifi than comic book style and is a bit linear. The audience was expecting an action filled Summer blockbuster, not a (more…)

The Heat (Movie)

Main Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Sandra Bullock

Review: 4.5 out of 10 stars.

Premise: 2 non-feminine women — 1 federal agent (Bullock) and 1 police detective (McCarthy), who are both dedicated to their work and have extreme different personalities, have to work together, reluctantly, on investigating a drug related case.

The plot was simple, with just a simple flowchart of 1 leader of another leader.

Bullock’s character is uptight and in boyish clothing. Well, she just did not seem to play well in humorous roles and was unable to act mean.

McCarthy, on the other hand, looks like she just acts as she was still in Bridesmaids — foul and loud mouth, crass humor, open and unrefined.

It is 4 out of 10 stars for the first half of the movie as the plot was way too simple and inadequate (more…)
